IB Learner Profile
The IB Learner Profile attempts to represent a well-rounded, internationally-minded person who has respect for others and themselves. In the Primary Years Programme (elementary age), students learn that there are people from nations and cultures outside of where they live. They gain an understanding of and respect for diversity. At VWCS, we encourage this way of thinking because it enables them to see that each person on earth was created by God for a purpose, and is loved and valued. As students develop this mindset toward their fellow human beings, they are instilled with a sense of community that stretches across the globe.
The Primary Years Program attempts to do this through an emphasis on the spectrum of attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
The IB Learner Profile describes students who are:
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.”
Students develop their natural curiosity while actively enjoying independent learning sustained throughout their life.
“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Showing empathy, compassion, and respect to others, students personally commit to service, in university and beyond, that positively effects the world.
“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
Students creatively express ideas and effectively collaborate with group members.
“He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart.”
Working with a spirit of excellence, students demonstrate integrity, character, respect for the rules, and personal accountability.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Students approach unfamiliar situations with courage and forethought, successfully transitioning those skills to university, confidently tackling new subjects.
“An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”
Students explore local and global concepts, ideas and issues, leading to in-depth knowledge and understanding across a broad range of disciplines.
“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”
Students exercise initiative when thinking through complex problems, making reasoned decisions, finding answers, and then following up with “why.”
“A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding.”
Students understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, they seek and evaluate a range of viewpoints and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other communities.
“And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Participating in extracurricular opportunities, students obtain intellectual, physical and emotional balance – achieving personal well-being.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
Students give thoughtful consideration to learning, assessing their strengths and limitations to better articulate their academic growth and personal development.
